  • October 2014 Athlete of the Month

    Who is Mathew Perez?
I am a Christian, son and a brother. I go by Faith, Family, and Fitness. I'm 22 years old, born and raised proudly from the south side of San Antonio. I am currently a server at Big Lous Pizza while pursuing a career in sports medicine athletic training at The University of the Incarnate Word. I played football, baseball, track and basketball in high school. –Fear nothing but God himself.Duality 2014 - Mathew Perez of Command CrossFit

When did you first try CF?
The first day I tried crossfit was at Command CrossFit opening day February 2013. The WOD was chipper style 50-40-30-20-10 with KB swings, pull ups, deadlifts, and other movements I can't remember. Marc gave the option to do two rounds if we felt we could handle it. Needless to say I probably should have done one round being that I never deadlifted or did KB swings in my life, but I decided to just pace out one more round. It was a great experience.

Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
I don’t have favorites when it comes to a WOD. I try to take each WOD with the same mentality. Being said it is a lot easier for me to answer what my least favorite WOD is and that is anything that has to do with rowing, running or farmer carries. My favorite CF movements would have to be anything gymnastics–toes to bar, muscle ups, pull ups, HSPU, etc. I also enjoy the oly lifts. Who doesn’t like a good PR?

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?
The community is probably the main aspect that keeps me coming back. Everyone is super friendly at Command CF. Marc and all the coaches have done a great job to give the box very humble identity and I feel that aspect has helped make the box grow. The fact that everyone gets excited for each other when a goal or PR is reached is also very contagious. I always do better when I see someone hit a PR before me.

How has CrossFit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?
CrossFit has helped in my own personal health and wellness because small amount of people know that I used to weigh 201 lbs. It has helped me keep structure in my everyday life, and has helped me continue in a healthy lifestyle-spiritually and physically.

Any advice for someone new to CF?
My best advice I could give to anyone new to CF is to not take yourself too seriously and to trust the process of the progress of a baby step. Enjoy yourself in each workout and have fun because once it becomes more than that set backs will arise.

If you designed a workout, what would it be?

If I designed a workout it would have to be something along the lines of this

    3RFT
    5 ring muscle ups
    10 STOH @155/105
    15 Bar Facing Burpees
    10 Hang Cleans 155/105
    5 HSPU

    5min rest

    15-12-9
    deadlift 315/205
    wallball 20/24

What kind of meals/foods do you enjoy? What is your favorite Paleo, or non-Paleo food?
I enjoy protein dense meals anything with a lot of meat. I don’t follow paleo and I eat mostly what I want. I drink lots of milk (4-5 gallons a week). I am a Progenex addict. My favorite food would have to be pizza, which is a pre-comp meal for me. I also enjoy eating a nice juicy hamburger.

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
To have Super Saiyan Goku powers because of the incredible enhanced speed and power that I could use for CrossFit (and have crazy cool hair).

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months as it pertains to your CF training?

In the next twelve months I see myself continuing training to be the best CrossFit athlete I can be. With God's blessings, I hope to become a regional athlete within the next year.

  • September 2014 Athlete of the Month

September 2014 Athlete of the MonthWho is Ruth Thomson?
I grew up in a large family with one sister and five brothers on small dairy farms, first outside of Stockton, Missouri and then in Southern Oregon. Dairy farming shaped my attitude toward work and pleasure. There were heavy milking machines and bales of hay to contend with twice a day.  It was growing up with two-parents at home that led me to decide, at age 12, to be a stay-at-home Mom (and now Grammy). I was very fit as a kid, and loved PE but I did not participate in organized sports.  In December 1978, I married Tom Thomson. We have two amazing adult children, Faith and Levi, who are married and to date have blessed us with three Grandchildren.

When did you first try CF? Tell us about your first WOD.
In January 2014, my physical therapist, Jorge Guerreo recommended I attend the Functional Movement class! My first WOD was under Coach Blake. I was excited, scared and sad because I wanted to do everything but my body would not do what I wanted it to do.

Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
My favorite movement is the handstand as it is the closest to cartwheels and round offs, something I have tried to do every month or so my whole life.

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?
Command CF is positive environment and I love both the coaches and participants! There is both fun and challenge every day.  Every coach, I have worked with–Marc, Blake, Michelle, and Kristina–are on top of things and give me correct instruction to keep me from getting hurt. And as I said earlier - I loved PE and this is like PE for grown ups.

How has crossfit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?
For the first time in my life I am learning how to lift things properly. I have nearly worn out parts of my body and now I am able to strengthen muscles and learn the correct way to do daily tasks.

Any advice for someone new to CF?
Listen to your body and listen to your coaches, and try your best to apply what they say - it makes you better.

September 2014 Athlete of the Month

If you designed a workout, what would it be?
Coaches would have to advise me on the order and whether this would be a healthy combination, but I would go for handstand holds, strict pull-ups, medicine ball sit-ups and deadlifts.

What kind of meals/foods do you enjoy? What is your favorite Paleo, or non-Paleo food?
I love most every food that I am not allergic to (and most of those I am allergic to)! Dark Chocolate is my favorite food.  Growing up a dairy farmer, breakfast has always been my favorite meal. In preparation for the 5:30 am class, I am up and eating between 4:30 and 5 am a breakfast of two-strips of bacon with one fried egg, one cup of coffee and one square of 72% to 99% dark chocolate.

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
I don't want superpowers.  I just want my regular powers to function better and to continue to have as good of health as possible.

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months as it pertains to your CF training?
I see myself plugging away, listening to my coaches that challenge me to listen to my body and push me just a little bit further than I had been before.  I have been learning to compete with myself and go one more step up from where I thought I could be.

  • August 2014 Athlete of the Month

September 2014 Athlete of the MonthWho is Hugo Escobedo?

I'm originally from Brownsville, TX, but I've lived in San Antonio for 13 yrs.  I just started my 7th year as a band director at Lee High School.

When did you first try CrossFit?

I started the last week of December 2013.  My brother in law and sister in law shared with me how much they enjoyed the variety in Crossfit workouts and encouraged me to try it out.  My first WOD was with my brother in law. I remember thinking about 10 minutes in, "Wow this is a good workout."  Then I realized...that was only the warm-up. It was intense to say the least, but I knew I wanted more.

Do you have a favorite CrossFit WOD or movement?

Not sure if I can say I enjoy them yet, but if I had to choose, I'd say man makers and pull-ups.

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?

I keep coming back because I feel better and I see results.  I enjoy that every workout is different and challenging.  The coaches and people I train with are encouraging and kind.

How has CrossFit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?

I feel like I have more endurance now than I did in my 20s. Working out with others makes me push myself harder.

Any advice for someone new to CrossFit?

Be prepared to hurt and sweat, but you're gonna feel great after and you WILL get stronger.  Don't get discouraged if you are the last one to finish a WOD, or if you get beat by a strong pregnant woman (like I did).

If you designed a workout, what would it be?

    1 mile warm up
    50 pull ups
    40 wall balls
    30 sit ups
20 air squats (not my favorite)
    10 hand release push ups
"cool down" with a mile run

What kind of meals/foods do you enjoy?

My favorite food is hamburgers or anything grilled.

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

o fly or to be strong enough to beat Coach Marc on a WOD

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months as it pertains to your CrossFit training?

I see myself getting healthier, stronger and WODing my love handles away.

  • July 2014 Athlete of the Month

July 2014 Athlete of the MonthWho is Claudia Medina?

Born and raised in Saltillo Coahuila, Mexico but made San Antonio my home for about 15 years. I work at a medical distribution company managing National and International accounts. My athletic background is Pilates Reformer, which I loved but could never go back after experiencing the fun and variety offered by CrossFit.

When did you first try CrossFit?

I became a Crossfit enthusiast while trying to find a new outlet for my fitness goals and became a proud member of Command CrossFit back in November 2013. One of my first and most challenging workouts was an Endurance class. Coach Michelle’s passion for fitness inspired me to begin this new adventure that is CROSSFIT. I felt soreness in parts of my body I didn’t even know where, but I remember I came back the next day to try again. It felt awesome!!

Do you have a favorite CrossFit WOD or movement?

Wall balls are my favorite movement because they are very challenging to me and I feel like superwoman when I’m done with the reps.

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?

Variety and results sums up why I love CrossFit. The tremendous support from all the coaches, their friendliness, positive attitude and the love for the awesome feeling of accomplishment when completing the WOD’s keeps me here and happy to come back again. As all CrossFit lovers must know “No pain, No gain”.

How has CrossFit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?

Crossfit has helped me develop a strong sense of personal strength. It is great motivation to see other athletes achieve a superior than average fitness; working out with other athletes whose level of fitness is greater than mine inspires me tremendously and makes me feel that I too can achieve my fitness goals, Si SE PUEDE!!

Any advice for someone new to CrossFit?

Don’t be afraid to push yourself. You will find that you can do a lot more than you ever expected and will be pleasantly surprised with the awesome results.

If you designed a workout, what would it be?

Lots of sit ups or any movement that would tone the core muscles. Also, farmer’s carriers and running because I enjoy these exercises the most.

What kind of meals/foods do you enjoy?

Avocado, hummus, oatmeal and egg white omelets with as many veggies as possible. My guilty pleasure is Chai-tea latte with soy milk, blueberry pancakes and backed tostadas.

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

My superpower would be to maintain my strength throughout the WOD by borrowing other athletes' abilities just by looking at them... Hahaha!

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months as it pertains to your CrossFit training?

I see myself as strong as I can be and able to achieve and maintain perfect form when lifting weights YEAAAAAAH!!

When did you first try CF? Tell us about your first WOD.

"I was introduced to CrossFit back in August by a good friend of mine. I was instantly hooked! I had been interested in CrossFit for a while, but I was too scared to try it out. I worked out so hard during my first WOD that I can't even remember it LOL.

They know our weaknesses and yet seem to make us feel like nothing is impossible!

How has CrossFit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?

"I feel like I am in the best shape of my life. I remember back in elementary school being a little chubster and trying to climb the rope, I couldn't even hold myself up. I can't wait to see what my body will be able to do a year from now.

  • May 2014 Athlete of the Month

    Who is Mike Garcia?

I am a God Fearing Man that grew up the son of hard working parents that would migrate from Texas (Picking Oranges) to California (Picking Grapes) every year. Eventually we settled down in Alamo, Tx down in the Rio Grande Valley. I enlisted in the USAF in (1996-2001) as a Firefighter and it most likely was the best decision I have ever made. I received a BA in Management in 2010 from Wayland Baptist University which was another proud moment for me.  Currently I am a Civilian DoD Firefighter on Lackland AFB and I enjoy every minute of it. Athletically I grew up playing baseball and football.

When did you first try CF? Tell us about your first WOD.

My first experience with CF was in October 2013. For months My friend Kim kept encouraging me to try it but I was always hesitant. I finally tried it with my good friend Jonathon starting the same day...maybe that was divine intervention... and it's been awesome since!!!

Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?

My favorite CF WODs are the MetCon WODs...for firefighting I believe you need endurance more over strength  so MetCon WODs help me. My favorite CF movement is the Pull Up.

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?

The community and fellowship is what keeps me coming back. Everyone is very encouraging and friendly. I see members working hard on their skills and WODs and that pushes me to improve.

How has Crossfit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?

CF has helped improve my happiness. My friends see a confidence in me that they had not seen before and that makes them feel happy too. Body wise...I had been working out for three years before CF and saw some steady results.  In my first six month of CF I've seen better and faster results, and I'm in the best physical shape I've ever been in.

Any advice for someone new to CF?

Advice I have for the older Crossfitter is to be patient. Stuff is going to hurt at first, if you stick with it slowly goes away and you will see the results you're looking for "Like wanting to look HOT!"

If you designed a workout, what would it be?

Probably a Chipper with a little of everything.

What kind of meals/foods do you enjoy? What is your favorite Paleo, or non-Paleo food?

I eat mostly Vegan (Yup I still see strength results). I chose Vegan because it has helped me lower my BP and Cholesterol and now I'm just used to eating Vegan.  I do occasionally eat meat when I visit my parents because my mom gets upset if I don't eat her food. My cheat food is Pizza w/meat and cheese.

If you could have a super power what would it be and why?

I would want super strength and speed so I can beat Rich Froning at the CrossFit Games and get an endorsement deal from Reebok and get all the free Nano shoes I want.  Oh and save lives too.

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months as it pertains to your CF training?

I see myself continuing to show up, learn, work hard, improve, and inspire on a daily basis.

  • April 2014 Athlete of the Month

April '14 Member of the MonthWho is Jonathan Corado?
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. I am currently serving Active Duty in the United States Air Force. I’ve been enlisted for a total of 8 years. I don’t have much of an athletic background aside from the military standard to maintain my overall fitness. I have been CrossFitting since July of 2012.

When did you first try CF? Tell us about your first WOD.
I was introduced to CrossFit by a coworker. Being tired of the same exercise routine, the variety of exercises is what caught and held my interest in CF. My first CF WOD was “Baseline”:
    500m Row
    40 Air Squats
    30 ABMAT Sit Ups
    20 Hand Release Push Ups
    10 Pullups
    For Time

I remember thinking, “Pull ups?! This will be embarrassing.” However, I was able to scale the pull ups by using the thickest band available. I finished the workout in 6.37 and it felt like an eternity. After completing the workout, I recognized immediately that I was out of shape.

Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
My favorite WOD is Fran <3. Personally, I like to focus on my least favorite movement which is the muscle up, both bar and rings. This movement has been my most challenging. I have successfully completed a single ring muscle up and I have yet to complete a bar muscle up. I equally enjoy the majority of CF movements.

What keeps you coming back and/or favorite aspect of Command CF?
I came across Command CF because the location is close and convenient. I fell in love with Command CF due to the camaraderie, vibe, and overall atmosphere. I truly appreciate the professionalism and patience exhibited by each one of the coaches. Everything about Command CF keeps me coming back. The coaching, the athletes, the cleanliness, the equipment, the jokes, the chalk monsters, the chalk nazis… I can go on forever.

How has Crossfit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?
CrossFit helps to keep me in an active healthy lifestyle. I’ve gained confidence in almost everything that I do. I dislike working out alone. I tend to push myself harder working within a group of people that share common interests/goals.

Any advice for someone new to CF?
My advice for someone new to CF is to be patient, have faith, and to change their diet. Have patience with a lot of the different movements. Have faith in themselves, coaches, and people around them. Lastly, change their diet to benefit the most out of crossfit. Would you put diesel fuel in a car that takes unleaded gasoline?

If you designed a workout, what would it be?
My workout would be 3 rounds of 100m Farmers Carry’s, 50 double unders, and 10 burpees For Time. I don’t dislike Farmers Carrys, I HATE THEM!!!!!!!

Do you enjoy Paleo meals? What is your favorite non-Paleo food?
I enjoy Paleo snacks! I can eat raw veggies ALL DAAAAY! ALLL DAAAAAY! My favorite non paleo food is Lasagna…. ALL DAY!

If you could have a super power what would it be and why?
If I had a super power it would be God. I would go back in time and recreate a Jonathan Corado and make him the fittest man on Earth, BOOM!

  • March 2014 Athlete of the Month

Command CF March Athlete of the Month

From left to right: Pablo, Marc and Steven

    Who is Steven Venegas?
I was born in Southern California, moved to Texas in '98. I’ve played hockey most of my life, played a little tennis in high school, then college ice hockey for a few years. I love Texas, especially Austin.

When did you first try CF?  Tell us about your first WOD.
I first tried CF in March of 2013. I remember a lot of burpees, box jumps, kettle bell swings and deadlifts in my first WOD. I remember being super sore and hating it, but at the same time wanting to come back for more.

Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
I love what MURPH stands for and enjoy only doing it once a year, but its very rewarding once you finish. My favorite movement is probably the overhead squat. It's difficult bit I love the challenge.

What keeps you coming back / favorite aspect of Command CF?
I love how I feel after a WOD, and seeing improvements from the last time I attempted a movement or workout. My favorite aspect of Command has to be the people and sense of community that Marc has helped create. I’ve met some amazing people at Command and I enjoy every minute of my time there with them.

How has crossfit helped you in your own personal health and wellness?
I feel healthier than I ever have, and starting my day with a workout gives me the energy to make it through the work week.

Any advice for someone new to CF?
Give it a try! The coaches are very patient and well trained. I love how they are willing to make every workout accessible to anyone that wants to try it. I promise, one week and you’ll be addicted like the rest of us!!

If you designed a workout, what would it be?
I’d do overhead squats for the strength, and probably a Metcon of T2B, Inverted Burpees, medball slams and kettlebell swings sandwiched between 400 meter rows.

Do you enjoy Paleo meals? What is your favorite non-Paleo food?
I do enjoy paleo meals, it forces more creativity out of the meals I make. But if I’m going to have a cheat day you’ll probably find me having a Pork Love pizza at Dough with a glass of wine!

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
Flying has to be number one. I think everyone has wanted to fly like Superman at one point in their life.

My favorite WOD is probably Cindy. I couldn't do the most scaled version of a push-up or a pull-up when I started. I love that I can do them now and look forward to any WOD that has them!

    4.  What keeps you coming back / favorite aspect of Command CF.
The athletes and the coaches! The environment that they create is supportive and fun! I love that the coaches are all incredibly patient and attentive.. The athletes are all amazing and inspiring! In the past nine months I've met some awesome people and made some great friends!

    5.  Any advice for someone new to CF?
My advice to anyone doing crossfit is to focus on your own strengths and weaknesses and not those of others. It's hard not to compare yourself, but it's important not to. This is something that I'm definitely still learning myself.

    6.  If you designed a workout, what would it be?
Something similar to the 12 days of Christmas, so maybe..
    1. 400m row 2. Man makers 3. HSPU 4. DB Snatch 5. Burpee-Box jumps 6. HRPU 7. Wall-balls 8. Med ball sit-ups 9. DB G2O 10. Jumping lunges

    7.  Favorite non-paleo food?
    Pizza... Bread and cheese generally!

    8.  If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
To fly! I've always wanted to be able to fly!

    1.  Who is Casey Dennis?
I grew up in New Braunfels and played tennis for most of my life, I never lifted a single weight until I stopped playing competitively in 2009 and decided to start lifting weights to learn a different type of fit.

    2.  When did you first try CF?  Tell us about your first WOD.
I was introduced to crossfit by a friend in 2010 after a yr of pretending to know what I was doing in the gym. The workout we did was Fran. I was told guys finish that in about 3 minutes so I didn't think much about it."psh! crossfit can't be that bad if the workout is only 3 minutes!" I had to use the women's prescribed weight and I think I remember it taking me about 15 minutes to complete and I thoroughly hated every single second! #scaredandconfused

    3.  Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
My favorite workouts now involve cleans, kipping everything, squats, snatches, turkish getups, burpees(some days)....movements I never thought I'd do.

    4.  What keeps you coming back / favorite aspect of Command CF.
Results and the Command CF community keep me coming back. In 6 months I have felt strength and mobility gains EVERYWHERE. When I started in May, Coach Tim and Marc taught me just about everything I know. The coolest part is that I've learned that much more watching and listening to the other athletes and coaches because everyone at Command inspires, critiques and motivates eachother every single day.

    5.  Any advice for someone new to CF?
Do not let crossfit scare you! Big mistake. CF is for ALL levels of experience and mobility! There's not a workout that can't be completed and if you want to reach a goal, consistency is #1. You are the only thing that will get in the way.

    6.  If you designed a workout, what would it be?
    On a good day....
    30 pull-ups, then 3rft:

    • 400m run
    • 20 front squats
    • 20 burpees
    • 20 push press

    • 30 med-ball situps

    Bwahaha

    7.  Favorite non-paleo food?
    Whataburger and pizza

    8.  If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
Super human strength so I wouldn't feel like such a sissy when I'm 2 rounds in with 2 more to go.

    1.  Who is Vivian Graham?
I was born and raised in Houston, but San Antonio has become my second home. Growing up with 3 younger brothers, I've always enjoyed sports however I was more of the cheerleader rather than actually participating.

    2.  When did you first try CF?  Tell us about your first WOD.
I first tried Crossfit in Houston with my mom. My first WOD was the "Murph". I was sore for 10 days but after that, I signed up with Command Crossfit and have been loving it ever since.

    3.  Do you have a favorite CF WOD or movement?
My favorite CF WOD would have to be something that involves 400 to 800 m runs,(front/back) squats, and sit ups. I love the feeling of accomplishment at the end

    4.  What keeps you coming back / favorite aspect of Command CF?
My favorite part of Command Crossfit is the environment. I really feel like the coaches make it a personal experience. All the athletes encourage and push each other. At the end of the day, I've finished an awesome WOD and hung out with genuinely cool people.

    5.  Any advice for someone new to CF?
You are never too old, weak, or out of shape to do Crossfit! Command Crossfit takes the time to get to know you personally and your capabilities. All WOD's can be modified to fit your needs and you'll always walk away wanting to come back tomorrow!

    6.  If you designed a workout, what would it be?
If I could create my on WOD it would look something like this. 3 RFT 400 m run, 12 box jumps, and 30 Russian kettle bell swings!

    7.  Favorite Non-Paleo food?
My favorite non-paleo food is good pizza and red wine!

    8.  If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
If I could have any super power it would be Superhuman Endurance so that I could do CrossFit then go home to finish homework and housework! BOOM!

  • August 2013 Athlete of the Month: "The OSO"

Justin Villegas is a transplant by way of California.  His previous athletic background includes football, basketball, track and rowing.  After meeting Coach Clint aka the "Missing Link", Justin attended one of our first classes and has been coming back ever since.

Justin's least favorite movement is man makers because they make him feel like a boy.

When Justin isn’t making a paleo recipe he’s gotten from Coach Tim, his favorite cheat meal is pizza and a good micro brew.

If Justin could have one super power it would be adaptive muscle memory so he would be able to watch Coach Marc and be able to do burpees efficiently.

To someone considering Command Crossfit he’d say, “If you think Crossfit is a bunch of shirtless chalk monsters, think again. Command Crossfit is a friendly and supportive box with coaches and athletes that will encourage you no matter what skill level you are at.”
